While I haven’t been experimenting with too many local recipes this past week, I have been a busy tourist and eating my way through Otavalo! Hopefully our guests have been entertained!!
Today we lunched on the lake, a relaxing and beautiful last day in the Otavalo area.
Mum liked the place…
Isn’t she adorable!
And the vegetarian plate definitely got my approval:
So nice to have an interesting meal option! Yesterday at a restaurant we didn’t end up eating at the server suggested trout or fish soup as the vegetarian option… not exactly what I had in mind. Cabanas del Lago is such a nice place right on San Pablo Lake. It has rustic cabin accommodation, mini golf, and all sorts of water activities. Might come back for a longer stay next time!
We decided to check out Parque Condor in the area today, a bird rescue and refuge I had heard some mixed reviews on. A taxi from town was $5, well worth it for the 5k-ish uphill route! Even if bird sanctuaries are not your idea of fun, it was absolutely worth it for the stunning views of the mountains, fields, and towns below.
The park itself is really nicely laid out to meander through and see the various birds of prey that are protected and rehabilitated at the center. There is a daily show at 11:30 with up-close views of birds as they soar over the edge of the hill, and an explanation of the work done at the park.
We thought we’d walk back down to town, but some nice people offered us a ride in the back of their truck, which we throughly enjoyed as we bounced down the cobbled roads and soaked up the mountain views.
Tomorrow we will head to Quito and see some sights there. Their trip is flying by much too quickly for me, I wish I could keep them here much longer! I’ll be posting more photos and tips on things to see in the area very shortly!
